English Translation:

Jamila sold a table and a chair for Rs 1050, thereby making a profit of 10% on the table and 25% on the chair. If she had taken a profit of 25% on the table and 10% on the chair, she would have got Rs 1065. Find the cost price of each.

Given:

the selling price of a table and a chair = Rs 1050

To find:

the cost price of each.

Solution:

Let the cost price of the table be Rs x, and the cost price of the chair be Rs y

the selling price of the table when sold at 10% profit =  Rs (x+10x/ 100 )

Rs = 110x/100

The selling price of the chair, when sold at 25% profit = Rs (y+ 25y/100)

Rs = 125y/100

110x/100 + 125y/100 = 1050  ---------(i)

the selling price of the table when sold at 25% profit =  Rs (x+25x/ 100 )

Rs = 125x/100

The selling price of the chair, when sold at 10% profit = Rs (y+ 10y/100)

Rs = 110y/100

125x/100 + 110y/100 = 1065  ---------(ii)

From equation (i) and (ii), we get

110x+125y=105000  and

125x+110y=106500

On adding and subtracting these equations, we get

235x+235y=211500  and

15x−15y−1500

i.e., x+y=900...(iii)

and,  x−y=100...(iv)

Solving equations (iii) and (iv), we get

x=500,y=400

Hence, the cost price of the table is Rs. 500 and the cost price of the chair is Rs. 400.
