10. A motor boat has a speed of 5 m/s. At time t=0, its position vector relative to a origin is(-11ỉ+16j) m, having the aim of getting as close as possible to a steamer. At time t=0, the steamer is at the point (4i +36j)m and is moving with constant velocity (10î-5j)m/s.
Find the direction in which the motor boat must steer
a)3î+4j
b)3î+4j
c)4î+3j
d)4î+4j
this is a very difficult question.

Answer:

4 i + 3 j

Explanation:

Given A motor boat has a speed of 5 m/s. At time t=0, its position vector relative to a origin is(-11ỉ+16j) m, having the aim of getting as close as possible to a steamer. At time t=0, the steamer is at the point (4i +36j)m and is moving with constant velocity (10î-5j)m/s.

Find the direction in which the motor boat must steer

a)3î+4j

We need to find the direction of motor boat, the position vector relative to origin is trying to get closer to a steamer which is moving with a constant velocity. The point is ai + bj.

So Vbs = (a – 10) i + (b + 5)j = 0

               a ^2 + b^2 – 10a + 5 b = 0

               25 = 10a – 5b

             2 a – b = 5

            So a = 4 and b = 3

So the direction the motor boat must steer will be 4 i + 3j
