Question :

An artificial satellite is moving in a circular orbit of radius 42250 km. Calculate its speed if it takes 24 hours to revolve around the earth.

Given :

  • radius of the orbit= 42250 km
  • time taken in order to complete one revolution = 24 hrs

Solution :

Total distance covered by the artificial satellite will be equal to the circumference of the orbit

 =  \mathtt{2πR}

 =  \mathtt{2 \times 3.14 \times 42250}

 =  \mathtt{ \green{265330 \:k m}}

Total time taken by the artificial satellite to complete one revolution

 =  \mathtt{24 \times 3600}

 =  \mathtt{ \pink{86400 \: sec}}

we know that ,

 \star  \boxed{\mathtt{speed =  \dfrac{distance}{time} }}

 \rightarrow \mathtt{speed =  \dfrac{265330}{86400} }

\rightarrow \mathtt{ \boxed{ \red{speed = 3.07 \dfrac{km}{s} }}}

Given, Radius of the circular orbit = 42250\ km

\therefore Circumference of the orbit = 2\pi r = 2.\frac{22}{7}. (42250) = 265571.4\ km

The satellite takes 24 hours to revolve around the earth.

We know, Speed = \frac{Distance}{Time}

\\ = \frac{265571.4}{24} \\ \\ = 11065.4\ kmh^{-1} \\ \\ = \frac{11065.4}{3600}\ kms^{-1} \\ \\ = 3.07\ kms^{-1}

Therefore, the speed of the artificial satellite is 3.07\ kms^{-1}
