Answer:

a)In the story, 'The Last Lesson', written by Alphonse Daudet, the little boy Franz was supposed to be prepared with the grammar lesson 'Participles' for the class. It was because his French teacher, M. Hamel had announced the previous day that he would take a test on participles.

b)Mukesh's dream is to learn to drive a car and become a motor mechanic. His dream is likely to be fulfilled because one can sense a kind of determination in him to ensure the fulfillment of his dream. Though the garage is a long way from his home he is willing to walk to learn despite the odds against him.

c)When Edla went to the iron mill to fetch the peddler, she noticed that he was frightened. She had doubts that the peddler had stolen something or had escaped prison. His appearance and behaviour also left her in doubts whether he was actually an educated man, as claimed by her father.

d)The phrase used in the poem Keeping Quiet is "no truck with death". In this poem, the poet is asking everybody to keep quiet and still for a while. With this phrase, he wants to clarify that silence does not mean a complete association wih death. Rather, it should be a moment of speculation and introspection.

e)Catacombs means a underground cemetery . The poet use the symbol of the catacombs in connection with the lives of the children of the school of the slum because for them the map which is hanging on the wall of classroom doesn't belong to them .

f)Gandhiji agreed to a settlement of 25 percent refund to the farmers because he wanted to break the dead lock on the percentage of refund between the landlords and the peasants. For him the amount of the refund was not important.
