Question - 10. At 27°C, 250 mL of He diffuses in 15 minute

What is the time taken for 500 mL of SO2

diffuse under the Same experimente

conditions

K

1) 120 min

2) 80 min

3) 30 min

4) 150 min

Given - Volume of Helium - 250 ml

time of diffusion - 15 min

Volume of Sulphur dioxide - 500 ml

Find - Time of diffusion

Solution - Time of diffusion will be calculated by the help of Graham's law of diffusion. The law states that rate of diffusion of gases is inversely proportional to the square root of molecular mass of gases.

The formula will be stated as follows -

rate He/rate SO2 = ✓Molecular mass SO2/✓Molecular mass He

Rate of diffusion can also be written as - Volume / time.

Hence, formula will be -

V1*t2 / V2*T1 = ✓(M2/M1)

Molecular mass of He - 4g

Molecular mass of SO2 - 64g

Keeping the values in equation-

250*T2/500*15 = ✓(64/4)

250*T2/7500 = 4

250*T2 = 30000

T2 = 120 min.

Hence, the time taken for diffusion of gas is option (1) - 120 min.
