Damping means an influence caused within or upon the oscillatory system. That gradually affects of reducing and restricting in oscillation. Some example are viscous damping, coulomb damping.

Viscous damping: It is caused by the loss of energy in the form of liquid lubrication between the moving parts or into a fluid that forced through a small opening by piston which act as a automobile shock absorbers.

Coulomb damping is a process of constantly machine damping in which energy is absorbed.
