energy flow in a food chain is unconditional as firstly autotrophs convert sun energy into organic compounds and later these plants were eaten by primary level consumers and the chain goes on but energy once acquired by upper level organism can't be converted back, as for example once plants prepare organic compounds there after it can't be converted back to sunlight
