Example of Force changes Direction

  • Baseball: Pitcher sends ball towards home plate, batter applies force with bat against ball, ball goes in new direction.
  • Football: QB throws football upward at an angle, the force of gravity pull on the football, curving it’s path down to the ground (where hopefully, someone catches it).
  • Spider Man: Spidy jumps off a building as he shoots a web strand at the top of a flag pole in front of him. As he falls down, he pulls on the web and swings forward until his downward motion is changed into forward motion.
  • Flash Gordan: Rocket ship is coasting through space. Flash turns the ship to point perpendicular to the direction of travel (sideways) and applies trust with his rocket motor. The rocket ship change direction.
  • Cathode ray tube: A heated charged wire (cathode emitter) releases an electron which is attracted to the ground plate at the other end of the tube (this is the cathode ray). As the electron goes down the tube, it passes through a magnetic field which applies a force to the electron, changing its direction.
  • Turning while driving (frictional force)
  • Swinging a rope (tension force)
  • Planets revolving around a star (gravitational force)
  • Spinning in one of these: (normal force)
  • Flying in a plane (gravitational force)
  • Ball bouncing off a wall (normal force)
