Twenty farmers can plough a field in 30 days. After how many days should 5 farmers leave so that the work is completed in 35 days?

Answer :- the ploughing work requires 20*30 = 600 farmer days.

So if the work is to be done in 35 days we need 600/35 = 17.142 farmers.

Since we cannot have a fraction of a farmer, we should engage 20 farmers for x days and 15 farmers for (35-x) days. The equation is

20x + 15(35-x) = 600, or

20x + 525 - 15x = 600, or

5x = 75, or

x = 15.

So 5 farmers must be asked to leave after 15 days, so as to complete the entire ploughing work in 35 days.

Check; 20 farmers for 15 days and 15 farmers for 20 days = 300+300 = 600 farmer-days. Correct.
