Loess is a wind deposited material known as aeolian soils. The particles are predominantly silt in the 20 to 50-micron size. As it is wind-born particles tend to be uniformly graded and homogeneous. Some stability is attained by weak cementing of the particles with calcium carbonate. The uniform particle size results in uniform voids, and porous soil. Silt size particles are stacked point to point much like a pyramid of playing cards. This type of soil is very unstable especially when wet.

Loess came into the English language from the German, Löss, which can be traced back to the English word lose and the German word Los.
