Sodium and magnesium oxides are alkaline. Aluminium oxides are amphoteric (reacting both as a base or acid). Silicon, phosphorus, sulfur, and chlorine oxides are acidic. Some non-metal oxides, such as nitrous oxide (N2O) and carbon monoxide (CO), do not display any acid/base characteristics.

A basic oxide reacts with water to give a base. Examples include the oxide of most metals, such as Na2O, CaO, BaO. These are basic in nature. Calcium oxide reacts with water and produces calcium hydroxide, a base.

Acidic oxide :- Carbon dioxide with the formula CO2 and sulphur dioxide with the formula SO2 are two acidic oxides

Basic oxide :- Aluminum oxide with formula Al2O3 and Calcium oxide Ca(OH)2
