Types of Progressions:
Progressions are various types but we will discuss mainly three types of progressions. They are
a)
Arithmetic progression (A.P.)
b) Geometric progression (G.P.)
c)
Harmonic progression (H.P.)
Arithmetic progression (A.P.) :
A sequence is called an arithmetic progression if the difference of a term and the previous term
is always same i.e., a, - a = constant (=d) for all neN
Generally the first term a, is denoted by ‘a' and the constant difference is called common difference
and it is denoted by 'd'.
Properties of A.P.
1) If a is the first term and d is the common difference of an A.P, then the nth term is given by
a = a + (n-1)d
Here the terms are a, a +d, a + 2d, ..., a + (n - 1)d,...
Note: Ifd>0 then the sequence is an increasing A.P., and d<0 then the sequence is a decreasing
A.P. and d=0 then it is a constant sequence which is also an A.P.
