now, Squaring both sides;

⇒ (x + 1/x)² = (3)²

⇒ x² + 1/ x² + 2(x)(1/x) = 9

⇒ x² + 1/ x² + 2 = 9

⇒ x² + 1/ x² = 9 - 2

     

∴  x² + 1/ x²  = 7 is the correct answer.
