Answer:

27 births

Step-by-step explanation:

Given:

The mean birth rate of a week = 35

The mean birth rate from  Monday to Thursday = 32

The mean birth rate from Thursday to Sunday = 36

To Find:

Number  of births on Thursday

Solution:

Let the number of births on Monday be 'a', Tuesday be 'b', Wednesday be 'c', Thursday be 'd', Friday be 'e', Saturday be 'f', and Sunday be 'g'.

So,

\frac{a+b+c+d}{4} = 32  => a+b+c+d = 32 × 4 = 128

and, \frac{d+e+f+g}{4} = 36 => d+e+f+g = 36 × 4 = 144

Also, \frac{a+b+c+d+e+f+g}{7} = 35  => a+b+c+d+e+f+g = 35 × 7 = 245

Then, on adding first 2 equations, we get:

(a+b+c+d)+(d+e+f+g) =  128 + 144

=> a+b+c+2d+e+f+g = 272

Subtracting third equation from this equation, we get:

(a+b+c+2d+e+f+g) - (a+b+c+d+e+f+g) = 272 - 245

=> 2d-d = 27

=> d = 27

Thus, number of births on Thursday = 27
