DescriptionThe Sangam period, or Sangam Age or Third Sangam period, is the period of history of ancient Tamil Nadu and Kerala and parts of Sri Lanka spanning from c. 6th century BCE to c. 3rd century CE. It was named after the famous Sangam academies of poets and scholars centered in the city of Madurai. There were mainly three famous kings, namely, King Karikala was a famous king of the Sangam Cholas. Pattinappalai portrays his life and military conquests. Many Sangam poems mention the Battle of Venni where he defeated the confederacy of Cheras, Pandyas and eleven minor chieftains. It was also known as the empire of Cholas.
