IMPORTANCE OF FORESTS:

Forests are helpful to men in several ways, which are discussed as follows:

  • Forests are the source of food:

Forest provides us with many kinds of food. Fruits, vegetables, and spices are a natural food that we get from plants.

In addition, all animals feed on plants, so whatever animal products we eat come indirectly from plants. Thus, plants and, ultimately, forests are a food source for us.

  • Forests are the sources of raw materials for many industries:

Forts provide us with valuable products like wood, rubber, oils, and fibers like jute.

Leaves, flowers, and other parts of some plants are used in preparing medicines.

  • Forests prevent soil erosion:

The roots of trees hold the soil particles together and thus prevent soil erosion. As there are many trees in a forest, they control soil erosion over a large area. Trees also act as a barrier to blowing wind and flowing water that causes soil erosion.

  • Forests help control floods:

Trees act as a barrier for flowing water and thus reduce its speed. Forests consist of many trees. Thus, they help control floods by slowing the flowing water's speed.

  • Forests provide shelter to animals:

Forests are home to animals. Many animals, like birds, monkeys, deer, lions, elephants, tigers, rabbits, etc., live in forests.

  • Forests provide shelter to people:

Forests are also a home for many tribal people. They live in forests and depend on the forest for food, shelter, water, and medicine.

  • Forests maintain oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in the air:

They help purify the air. Animals use oxygen for the process of respiration and release carbon dioxide. Plants use carbon dioxide to prepare their food through photosynthesis and release oxygen as a by-product. It is for this reason forests are called green lungs.

  • Forests help control global warming:

Global warming is a major environmental issue. The average increase in the global temperature due to the rise in the concentration of carbon dioxide is called global warming. Plants use carbon dioxide from the air for photosynthesis and help keep the level of carbon dioxide under control to a great extent.

  • Forests help to regulate climate:

Plants release water vapour into the air by the process of transpiration, which keeps the air cool and helps in the water cycle by forming clouds. In this way, forests are also helpful in regulating the climate.

  • Forests serve as tourist destinations and a source of recreation:

Nowadays, forests have become a favourite tourist spot for camping, hiking, research, etc.
