(8 marks) Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (SBA) or Clean India Mission is a national campaign initiated by the Government of India, covering 4041 statutory cities and towns to clean the streets, roads and infrastructure of the country, under the aegis of Prime Minister of India, Mr Narendra Modi. The campaign was officially launched on October 2, 2014 at Rajghat, New Delhi, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi kicked in the motion by cleaning a road on his own. The campaign supports the Mahatma Gandhi's thoughts of maintaining a clean India. In addition, Bal Swachhta Abhiyan was especially launched on November 14, 2014 marking the birth anniversary of the first Indian Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru (also called as Chacha Nehru), who loved children. The 5-day long cleanliness drive marked the birth anniversary of Nehru and the birthday of first woman Indian Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi. The drive was set off by the then Indian Union Minister of Women and Child Development, Maneka Sanjay Gandhi, at Maidangarhi Anganwadi New Delhi. The main aim of the programme was to promote Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. Both the drives aim to cleanse India and sanitise its surroundings in every way.
