Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow:
Grandfather lived beside a huge lake, surrounded by rows and rows of tall trees. There
were ducks and plenty of fish in the lake. When Grandfather felt like fishing, he always
took me with him. We could always see the sun rise and even set from where Grandfather
lived. The sky was so big that we could never see where the end was. In the evenings, the
neighbours would bring their dogs over for a walk and I would lie with the little puppies.
The air was fresh and the chirping of the little birds would always bring a smile to my face.
Big sister and I liked to walk on the bridge that spanned across the lake to the other side
where the town was. There was always someone who would stop to talk to us there.
Everyone was very friendly.
Today, there are no longer any ducks in the lake. The trees surrounding the lake are also
gone. Grey factories have replaced them. Due to the noise from the machines, we can
also no longer hear the birds chirp. Grandfather stopped fishing in the lake because there
was no fish to be caught. The air is no longer fresh and smells of smoke. Now, the
neighbours do not bring their dogs over. People are also too busy to stop and talk to us. I
miss the sunrise. Now, all I see are rows of ugly, grey buildings. Everything has changed. Find the meanings of the following words from the passage.
