10 Rules of Report Writing
#1. Research report: As part of your academic course (especially if you’re studying a scientific or technical subject), you may need to write a research report.
#2. Title page: The title of your report, your name, the date, academic information (your course and tutor’s name).
#3. Summary / Abstract: In brief, the most important points of your report, your objectives, main findings, conclusions and recommendations.
#4. Table of Contents: All the sections and subsections of your report with page references, plus a list of diagrams or illustrations and appendices.
#5. Introduction: Why you’re researching the topic, the background and goals of your research, your research methods, plus your conclusion in brief.
#6. Main body / Discussion: (THE LONGEST PART OF YOUR REPORT!)
It contains an analysis and interpretation of your findings (often linked to current theory or previous research) divided into headings and subheadings for clarity. You can also include visual information, such as diagrams, illustrations, charts, etc.
#7. Results: The findings of your research but without any discussion or interpretation of them.
#8. Conclusion: What you can say about the results – your deductions, and the most important findings from your research.
#9. Recommendations: To recommend something from your own personal experience or the experience of others to help the reader find an alternative or to recommend them if they are not sure. Number the recommendations (for example: #69. ) if you have more than one. (Kinda optional)
#10. Appendices: Extra information which is too long for the main body of your report, such as tables, questionnaires, etc. (Also kinda optional)
