When non metal react with air, it forms non-metal oxide which is acidic in nature. Thus, when carbon(charcoal) burns in air, it forms an acidic oxide called carbon dioxide. The nature of the gas can be found by adding water to the gas in the test tube. And then put some blue litmus solution in the jar.
