Another issue with apples is that like most other fruits and vegetables, they contain pesticides. Additionally, wax is applied to apples to keep them fresh longer. Therefore, though it is a common saying that an apple a day keeps the doctor away, one needs to be wash apples with warm water (to remove the wax) and maybe even take the peel off to reduce pesticide consumption.
