Step-by-step explanation:

2x + y = 5 3x - 2y = 8

2(2x + y = 5) 3x - 2y = 8

4x + 2y = 10----(i) 3x - 2y = 8-----(ii)

Add i and ii,

4x + 2y = 10

3x - 2y = 8

7x = 18, x = 18/7

2x + y = 5

2(18/7) + y = 5

36/7 + y = 5

y = 5 - 36/7

y = -1/7
