(a) Portia's father had kept a will before he died. In which it was written that the suitor who choses the casket in which Portia's picture is kept will have to marry her and the one choses the wrong one will never be able to marry anyone. Portia was feeling very sad for this as she didn't like the suitors.... And she could not marry the person she liked. She obeyed the will even though his father had died because she really respected her father's opinion and didn't wanted to disobey him. This shows that she is a person who respects the opinion and is loyal towards others.

Yes, she is really worthy of respect as she followed her father's will even though he had died.

(b) Bassanio borrowed money from Shylock because he had to go to Belmont to marry Portia and Antonio was not having any cash ready with him as his ships were all abroad. Shylock and Antonio's relation was very bad. They both hated each other and also disrespected each other in public too. Antonio called Shylock as a dog in front of the jews.

Bassanio is a person who always keeps spending his money in merry making and usually takes debts from others...
