10 Students are made to stand in rows. If one student is extra in a
row there would be 2 rows less. If one student is less in a row
there would be 3 rows more. Find the number of students in the

= (x - 2)(y + 1) = xy

= xy + x - 2y - 2 = xy

= x - 2y = 2 -------(1)

= xy - x + 3y - 3= xy

= -x + 3y = 3 -------(1)

Solving the equations (1) and (2), we will get -

y = 5

Substituting the same in equation (1) -

x = 12

Total number of students = xy

= 12 × 5 = 60

Therefore, number of students in the  class is 60.
