Answer:Let,

A - Boy gets a scholarship

B - Girl gets a scholarship

so, P(A) = 0.4 & P(B) = 0.5

Prob that alteast one of them gets a scholarship = P (A Union B)

And as we know,

Prob (A Union B) = P(A) + P(B) - P (A intersection B)

Since, boy getting a scholarship and Girl getting a scholarship are independent events we have,

Prob (A Union B) = P(A) + P(B) - [P(A)*P(B)]

Prob (A Union B) = 0.4 + 0.5 - (0.2)

Prob (A Union B) = 0.7

cheers!
