the cause of the revolt was the use of enfield rifle , soldiers need to bite of the end of greased cartridge ,there was a rumour that the oil use to grease the gun was made up of fat is cow and pig, since the Hindu regards cow as sacred and the Muslims regar pigs as unclean so, the rumour hurt the sentiments of both Hind and Muslims in the army.

Military causes:
- The sepoys serving in the British army were ill paid, badly housed and racially discriminated.
- The chances of promotion of Indians in both civil and military services were very few. The highest post for an Indian in military was that of a subedar and in the civil services was that of a Sadar Admin.
- The special allowances or Bhatta for Indian soldiers fighting in far off Frontier places and the foreign lands was stopped.
- The soldiers were not allowed to wear turbans and grow beards. These apps and policies of the army hurt the religious sentiments of the Indian soldiers caused much resentment.
