Many people do not know about a rare quality which Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj possessed - Gratitude.
The following anecdote in his life proves that fact.
When Chhatrapati Shivaji maharaj fled from Agra in disguise and crossed a forest, he had to fight a tiger with his bare hands. While doing so, he was badly wounded. Blood loss had rendered him unconscious. A Brahmin priest who had gone to collect sacred wood sticks, found him in that condition and somehow managed to carry him to his house. He treated him tirelessly and gave him the best possible medical treatment in his small house for ten days.
It was only after six days that the Maharaja could become fully conscious and remember what had actually happened. Surprised to know that he had been saved on time by a poor stranger without any expectations, Shivaji Maharaj wanted to express his gratitude somehow but he did not have any money. Moreover he had to cross enemy country to reach his kingdom in disguise safely.
If something untoward happened to him during the journey, he would never be able to reward his savior. While thinking about possible solutions to this, he heard the public announcement, that the person who gives a proper clue about Shivaji Maharaj’s whereabouts will be rewarded with 10,000 gold coins by Aurangzeb. Hearing this, Shivaji jumped from his bed and wrote a letter to Aurangzeb requesting the Brahmin to deliver the same to him.
When the Brahmin priest handed over the letter to Aurangzeb, the Mughal king was overjoyed. He immediately gave the perplexed priest a bag containing 10,000 gold coins and sent his soldiers along with him to capture Shivaji maharaj. Upon hearing that the person staying in his house in disguise was Maharaj, the priest was shocked.
With tears streaming down his face, he asked maharaj why he gave that unwanted letter through him instead of reaching his kingdom safely.
Maharaj replied “ I owe my life to you but I did not have anything to give you as a token of my gratitude. While going through the forest, if I encounter wild animals and die, I may not have the opportunity to show how grateful I am to you in this lifetime. I don’t ever want to die as an ungrateful person. So I thought that this opportunity is a golden chance to express my gratitude. Don’t worry about me. I have already escaped once. I will somehow escape again and move back to my kingdom.”
From this, we see that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was not just the epitome of gratitude but also self-confidence.
