Use of mercury barometer and aneroid barometer is the same, to measure atmospheric pressure.

When it comes to accuracy, and sensitivity, there is absolutely no comparison. In laboratory, nobody will even touch aneroid barometer.

Mercury barometer has got a three feet (nearly one meter) long glass tube, containing mercury column and a bulb containing bulk of mercury at the bottom. Mercury is a costly material. It is very heavy in weight. Being a liquid, very difficult to carry outside. It has got very fine and delicate adjustments. It is a very sensitive instrument. Hence it has got fine vernier calipers to measure height of the column.

Aneroid barometer is small, fits in your pocket, hence easy to carry, fits in your palm, hence easy to observe, contains no liquid, so easy to handle, very cheap. It has got a simple dial like clock, no vernier, so easy to read.

The only drawback of aneroid is it is not sensitive

Where accuracy is needed mercury barometer, otherwise aneroid.

Goldsmiths will use an accurate and sensitive balance. Potato and onion vendor will not use goldsmith’s balance.
