Solution :

Each term is originally in the ratio , 3 : 7.

Let them be 3x and 7x respectively .

Let the value to be subtracted from both the terms be a .

After subtracting, the new ratio becomes 2:5

So,

( 3x - a)/(7x - a) = 2/5

> 5( 3x - a) = 2( 7x - a)

> 15x - 5a = 14x - 2a

>x = 7a

This is the required answer.
