Let, age of father = x
Age of son = y
By first condition,
x - 10 = 4(y-10)
x - 10 = 4y - 40
x - 4y = - 40 + 10
i.e. x - 4y = - 30..... (1)
By second condition,
x - 5 = 3(y-5)
x - 5 = 3y - 15
x - 3y = - 15 + 5
i.e. x - 3y = - 10..... (2)
Subtracting eqn. (2) from (1), we get
x - 4y - ( x - 3y) = - 30 - (-10)
x - 4y - x + 3y = - 30 + 10
-y = - 20
y = 20
Putting value of y in eqn(2),
x - 3y = - 10
x - 3 × 20 = - 10
x - 60 = - 10
x = - 10 + 60
x = 50
Therefore present ages of father and son are 50 years and 20 years respectively.
Age of son = y
By first condition,
x - 10 = 4(y-10)
x - 10 = 4y - 40
x - 4y = - 40 + 10

By second condition,
x - 5 = 3(y-5)
x - 5 = 3y - 15
x - 3y = - 15 + 5

y = 20

x = 50
