Ethene is the first member of the alkane family and it is prepared by the cracking of kerosene. Cracking is defined as the breaking down of a higher alkane into lower hydrocarbons.

There are two types of cracking:

⏩Thermal cracking=> It is the cracking carried out at high temp. but in the absence of any catalyst.

⏩Catalytic cracking=> It is carried out at low temp. in the presence of catalyst.

Ethene is an unsaturated hydrocarbon. It undergoes addition reactions. Addition of one reactant molecule to another reactant molecule is known as addition reaction.

Ethene reacts with bromine and decolourises the bromine. This addition of bromine is known as bromination.

Ethene also reacts with hydrogen in the presence of nickel catalyst to form ethane. This addition of hydrogen to unsaturated hydrocarbon is known as hydrogenation. It is industrially used to convert vegetable oils into vanaspati ghee. Ethene also decolourises alkaline solution of potassium permanganate.

Ethene is a unsaturated alkene . it is the first member of the alkene family having formula C(n)H(2n). upon hydrogenation it gives ethane .it reacts with hydrochloric acid(HCl) to form ethyl chloride .It reacts with methanol with methyl ethyl ether(CH3CH2OCH3).
