Since we are born, we are taught one thing, Respect your elders, they are older than you.

We respect our parents because they gave us birth, without them we should not have been here. They fulfill our needs, educate us, feed us, love us, nurture us.

We respect our teachers, because after our parents they educate us and without education we cannot take a simple step.

We respect our elders because they are elder than us and have more experience.

Now coming to the main point, Don't we respect most of our elders for the fact because we are ought to do so or are nudged for it and are forced or we are gonna be judged if we don't do so?

Respect the ones who really deserve respect not because they merely are our elders..

Can we really respect the parents who are physically or mentally abusive?

Can we really respect those parents who left us intentionally for their other love interest?

Can we respect those teachers of us who physically or mentally abuse us and also torture us by giving peer pressure?

Can we respect those elders or relatives who always judge us, compare us with their son/daughter or compare us with those intelligent Sharma ji ka beta and force us to follow their ways?

Do we love all our elders? Do we like all their ways or how they behave?

Can we respect those who harass or sexually abuse us even if they are adults?

The answer is definitely NO.

Now coming to people whom we don't know personally.

How many of us don't respect Swami Vivekananda or APJ Abdul Kalam?

How many of us don't respect Rabindra Nath Tagore or Kaji Nazrul Islam?

How many of us don't respect Mother Teresa or Sister Nibedita?

Do we know them personally? No.

But they are respected for their deeds not for their age .

Now coming to the commoners. Will we not respect the person who helps us in our life in one way or other? Will we not respect the person who saves us from harrasment or abuse? Will we not respect a person who teaches us something in our life or restores our faith in humanity? Sometimes even coolies, bus drivers, mail mans , servants , gutter mans, armymen, and even small children deserve to be respected.

Respect those who deserves respect, those whose deeds are worth respect. Yes our parents, teachers and elders also should be respected unless they do something disrespectful. Don't respect someone whom we not like forcefully or because of the fear of being judged.

Respect is earned. Not given. Respect deeds, not age.

ANSWER :-

We respect our parents because:

They're older and wiser- They have a few years on you, which means they have seen more of the world and have gathered a wealth of experience- which shouldn't be underestimated.

They're there for us no matter what- Parents will see you though the good and the bad and provide a listening ear and some sound advice.

They've made a lot of the same mistakes- Why do they seem to know everything? It's likely because they have been there, done it and got the T-shirt.

They're usually right- As much as we hate to admit it- 99% of the time our parents speak the truth and it's annoying but also to your benefit if you do what they suggest.

They know us better than you know yourself- They can see the things in you that you're not able to but in telling you- you become more self-aware.

They just want us to be healthy and happy- All a parent ever wants is their child to have a full and happy life. If that's their aim- everything they say and do is intended to move you towards that destination of keep you there.

They're proud of all our achievements- They probably still have your first drawing stashed away somewhere and a picture of you holding your degree on the wall. They congratulate you on every highlight of your life.

Their politeness is infectious- And it makes you realise there are some traditions that should still be upheld- like holding the door open for the next person, letting an older person take the seat on the bus and looking up from your phone when someone's talking to you.

They raised us- They invested time, money, love, patience and effort in making you the person you are today and probably made many sacrifices in the process.

They won't be around forever- Don't ever take them for granted because one day they won't be here- so make the most of every second you spend with them.
