Silently tiptoeing on padded feet, he slid across the farmyard. Ears straining for sounds of dog or farmer. Certain death if he is found here. Heart racing but hunger and the scent of chicken driving him on. Irresistible. Mouth-wateringly close. Blissful jaws closing on feathers and succulent flesh. The joy of running wild across the fields back to his den; tonight starvation wouldn’t win.

Breaking his dreams; sudden terror. Light flooding the yard pins him to the spot. Nowhere to hide. Only chance is to run. Behind him the sharp click of a trigger… and then a deafening bang.
