Given :  1000 families with 2 children were selected randomly and the following data were recorded

no of boys        0     1       2

no of families 140 560 300

a family is chosen at random

To Find : probability that it has

1. no boy

2.one boy

3.2 boys

4.2girls

5.atleast one boy

6.exactly two boys

7.atmost one boy

Solution:

no of boys      no of families

0                      140

1                       560

2                      300

Total                1000

probability that it has    no boy  = 140/1000 = 0.14

probability that it has    1 boy  = 560/1000 = 0.56

probability that it has   2 boys  = 300/1000 = 0.3

probability that it has   2 girls  = no boys =  0.14

probability that it has atleast 1 boy  = 1 boy + 2 boy   = 560 + 300 = 860

= 860/1000 = 0.86

probability that it has  exactly two boys  = 300/1000 = 0.3

probability  atmost one boy  = no boy + 1 boy  = 140 + 560 = 700

= 700/1000

= 0.7
