Here is your answer,

103 x 97 can be written as (100+3) (100-3)

It is in the form of (a+b) (a-b)
So , (a^2 - b^2 ) = (a+b)(a-b)

(100+3) (100-3) = 100^2 - 3^2
= 10000-9
= 9997
