105 goats, 140 donkeys and 175 cows have to be taken across a river. There is only one boat which will have to make many trips in order to do so. The lazy boatman has his own conditions for transporting them. He insists that he will ta ke the same number of animals in every trip and they have to be of the same kind. He will naturally like to take the largest possible number each time. Can you tell how many animals went in each trip?

SOLUTION :

Given:

Number of goats have to be taken across a river = 205

Number of donkey have to be taken across a river = 140

Number of cows have to be taken across a river = 175

First we need to find the HCF of 105 ,140 and 175 to find  the largest number of animals in one trip.

First we take 105 and 140 to find the HCF,by applying Euclid’s division lemma(a = bq + r).

140 = 105 x 1 + 35

105 = 35 x 3 + 0

Now we take 35 and 175 to  find the HCF

175 = 35 × 5 + 0

Here remainder is zero

HCF of 105 ,140 and 175  = 35

Hence, the largest possible number of animals went each trip is = 35.

Given 105 goats,140 donkeys,175 cows
to find how many animals went in each trip ???

105 => 3*5*7
140=>4*5*7
175=> 5*5*7

by taking H.C.F => 7*5 =35
∴ 35 animals in single trip
