By banning plastic bags we can take one positive step toward improving our care of the environment. Their main purpose seems to be convenience but people can retrain themselves to carry re-useable bags when they shop and not only are they stronger but they help keep plastic bags out of our landfill. Many countries have required shoppers to provide their own bags for years so the US is very slow in joining the parade. Another advantage is that the bags don’t end up in the ocean where so much marine life is killed because of them. Land animals are also subject to horrible deaths when they either ingest or become entangled in not only bags but plastic rings from drink cans. And one other advantage is that people become more aware of the deleterious effect disposable plastic (not deteriorating) has on our environment.
