11. A rectangular garden measures 60 m by 55 m. From the centre of each side a path 2 meters wide goes across
to the centre of the opposite side. Find the area of the paths.

Given that the paths are 2m on each side and goes across to the center of the opposite side. So, basically we have on one side a rectangle of length 60m and breadth 2m whose area is A

=60×2=120m

and on another side a rectangle of length 59m and breadth 2m whose area is A

=55×2=110m

One important note, the area of the central part has been included twice so, it has to subtracted once from the total area.

∴ Total area =120+110−(2×2)

=230−4

=226sq.m

∴ Total area of the path =226sq.m.
