Bismillah khan was a true legend and a successful shehnai player. He welcomed the nation by becoming the first Indian to play shehnai on 15th August, 1947 before leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru at Red fort etc. This made the occasion auspicious. He was secular minded and he, along with his family never thought of hindu and muslim to be different. Even if, he was a muslim, he used to play shehnai in temples like the Balaji temple. He learnt playing shehnai from his Uncle, Ali bux and used to create new ragas.
