In this circuit diagram the resistors are connected in series. In a series circuit connection the voltage gets divided.

Therefore when the voltmeter is connected between B and C the reading of the voltmeter would change. Since we know the total voltage flowing in the circuit we will first find out the total resistance in a series connection and then find out the current flowing in the circuit.
