11. In a school, total school hours are divided as follows: 20 minutes for morning prayer,
20 minutes for recess and 8 periods each of 40 minutes duration. If the prayer time
and recess time are increased to 40 minutes each, how long would each period be,
assuming the number of school hours to be the same?

Answer:

Total school hours = morning prayer time + recess time + time of total periods

Total school hours = 20 + 20 + ( 8 x 40 )

Total school hours = 40 + 320

Total school hours = 360

Now if the prayer time and recess time are increased to 40 minutes, and since

Total school hours = morning prayer time + recess time + time of total periods

Total school hours = 40 + 40 + ( 8 x X )

360 = 40 + 40 + ( 8 x X )

280 = 8 x X

X = 35 min

Hence if the prayer time and recess time are increased to 40 minutes then the time of the periods will be 35 min.
