11.Read the following passage and answer the questions. Cell is the structural and functional unit of all the living organisms, which is capable of carrying out all life processes. Robert Hooke observed honeycomb like compartments under the microscope and named them ‘cells’. There are two types of organisms based on the number of cells present in them: Unicellular organisms: They are single celled. For example: Mycoplasma, Amoeba Multicellular organisms. They possess two or more cells For example: Plant cell, animal cell Similar functions in multicellular organisms are carried out by groups of specialized cells forming different tissues. Tissues combine to form organs. Cells occur in different shapes: Usually cells are round, spherical, elongated, branched or spindle shaped. Amoeba has no definite shape. It changes its shape by forming pseudopodia. Similarly, WBC also changes its shape. 1) What is the basic functional and structural unit of life ? (1M) 2} Amoeba and paramecium belong to which category of organisms ? (1M) 3) What do tissue combined to form? (1M) 4) Which cell doesn't have nucleus ? (1M) 5)What are the organisms which are composed of many cells packed together called? (1M)

Answer:

1) The cell (from Latin cella, meaning "small room") is the basic structural, functional, and biological unit of all known organisms. A cell is the smallest unit of life. Cells are often called the "building blocks of life".

2) Protista Kingdom

In the six kingdom classification, the Protista Kingdom contains all single celled organisms which are eukaryotic, meaning which have a nucleus. They are called protists.

3) When tissues are assembled in various proportions to form a functional entity, an Organ is said to be formed. The organization of tissues within an organ determines the structure as well as the functional capabilities of the organ. There are four main types of tissues within the human body.

4) Not every cell in the human body contains DNA bundled in a cell nucleus. Specifically, mature red blood cells and cornified cells in the skin, hair, and nails contain no nucleus. Mature hair cells do not contain any nuclear DNA.

5) A multicellular organism consists of many cells, grouped into tissues and organs and coordinated to act as a single living thing. All living cells— plant and animal—have several main parts. The cytoplasm and the nucleus together are known as the protoplasm, the living matter of the cell.

1.The cell is the basic structural and functional unit of life. Cells are independent, single-celled organisms that take in nutrients, excrete wastes, detect and respond to their environment, move, breathe, grow, and reproduce.

2.Protista Kingdom

In the six kingdom classification, the Protista Kingdomcontains all single celled organisms which are eukaryotic, meaning which have a nucleus. They are called protists.

3.TISSUES COMBINE TO FORM . MOLECULESCOMBINE TO FORM CELLS, CELLS COMBINE TO FORM TISSUES., TISSUES COMBINE TO FORM ORGANS , ORGANS COMBINE TO FORM ORGAN SYSTEM, ORGAN SYSTEMCOMBINE TO FORM ORGANISMS .

4.Prokaryotes

Prokaryotes are organisms whose cells lack a nucleus and other organelles. Prokaryotes are divided into two distinct groups: the bacteria and the archaea, which scientists believe have unique evolutionary lineages.

5.A multicellular organism consists of many cells, grouped into tissues and organs and coordinated to act as a single living thing. All living cells— plant and animal—have several main parts. The cytoplasm and the nucleus together are known as the protoplasm, the living matter of the cell.
