Let the larger number be x and the smaller number be y. Then, we have: x –y = 26 ………….(i) x = 3y …………(ii) On substituting x = 3y in (i), we get: 3y –y = 26 ⇒ 2y = 26 ⇒ y = 13 On substituting y = 13 in (i), we get: x – 13 = 26 ⇒ x = 26 + 13 = 39 Hence, the required numbers are 39 and 13

Solution :-

Let first number be x

and second number be y

According to the question,

  • x - y = 26 .............................(i)

  • x = 3y

  • x - 3y = 0 ............................(ii)

From equation (i),

x - y = 26

x = 26 + y ...............................(iii)

Putting the value of x in equation (ii)

x - 3y = 0

26 + y - 3y =0

26 - 2y = 0

-2y = -26

y = \rm\:\cancel\dfrac{-26}{-2}

y = 13

Putting the value of y in equation (iii),

x = 26 + y

x = 26 + 13

x = 39

Hence,the first number will be 39 and second number will be 13.
