let larger square side is S1 and smaller square side is S2

So

Shaded region area = larger square area -smaller square area

56 = S1 * S1 - S2 * S2

56 = S ^ 2-13 * 13

56 = S ^ 2-169

56 + 169 = S1 ^ 2

225 = S1 ^ 2

√225 = S1

15 = S1
