The correct answer is option (d) +5

GIVEN

Compound - Sodium Arsenate

Chemical formula - Na₃AsO₄

TO FIND

Oxidation number of Arsenic in sodium Arsenate.

SOLUTION

We can simply solve the above problem as follows -

Oxidation number represents the number of electrons an atom has gained or lost in a compound.

Let the oxidation number of Arsenic in sodium arsenate be, x

We know that,

Oxidation. number of Sodium, Na = +1

Oxidation number of Oxygen, O= -2

Also,

In a compound, the sum of the oxidation number of all the atoms is equal to zero.

Therefore,

3(+1) + x + 4(-2) = 0

3 + x -8 = 0

x = 8-3 = 5

Hence, the oxidation number of Arsenic in Sodium arsenate is +5
