11. Why should childless parents be encouraged to adopt a child?
Answers
Answer:
A childless couple should not be encouraged to adopt. There are roughly two categories of possible adoptees:
babies and young children, which are in short supply and high demand
Older children, which are not in high demand.
There is already a shortage of babies, so there is no societal benefit to driving up the demand even higher. Since the demand is high and the supply of babies is low, adopting a baby is very expensive and could make their lives very difficult and unhappy.
Adopting older children takes advanced parenting skills and really isn't a great idea for a couple who have never had children. Especially if they weren't all that enthusiastic to begin with, and had to be encouraged. Please don't misunderstand, adopting older children can be incredibly rewarding, but it isn't easy, and takes more patience, flexibility, time and generosity than the average parenting. Many adoptions are disrupted, not because the kids were bad, but because the adoptive parents were not prepared for the sacrifices required to best care for the unique needs of children who have lost their family.
A childless couple would probably be happy remaining childless. Otherwise they would already be in the process of adopting. It's not like they have never heard of adoption and need to be told. Choosing not to have children is also a valid and rewarding lifestyle.
