During the latter Vedic period, Varnas came to be birth-based rather than profession-based (as were in Rig Vedic period). Development of new professions gave rise to 'jatis. The Rig Veda describes Vishvamitra as a rishi, but Aitareya Brahmana mentions him as Kshatriya.
