There are two types of speeches in Grammar:-
- Direct Speech (Direct Narration)
- Indirect Speech (Indirect Narration)
(i) Direct Speech:- The words of the speaker which has no changes in it is known as direct speech.
Eg:- I said, "I am very tired of doing this work."
(ii) Indirect speech:- The words of the speaker which have necessary changes in them are known as indirect speech.
Eg:- I said that I was very tired of doing that work.

Important Rules!!!
For Direct Speech:-
- The reporting verb must be separated by the direct speech using comma. (,)
- The words spoken by a speaker are enclosed within double inverted commas. (" ")
- The first letter inside the double inverted commas must be capital.
For Indirect Speech:-
- The reporting verb must be changed according to the sense conveyed by the speech
- The tense of the reporting verb must not be changed.
- The comma (,) which separates the repoting verb from the direct speech must be removed.
- The double inverted commas (" ")must be removed.
- All the kinds of senetnces must be converted into assertive statements.
- The indirect speech must be introduced using that, whether, what, where, etc.
- Other necessary changes must be made in person, verb forms, time, places and expressions.
