Concept

A pattern is an arrangement of lines or shapes, especially a design in which the same shape is repeated at regular intervals over a surface.

It is not only for shapes or lines but also of mathematical terms.

Given

12,20,19,26,....,31,30

Find

The number which will fit in the blank.

Explanation

The given numbers are according to a pattern.

first number=12

second number=12+8

third number=20-1

fourth number=19+7

fifth number=26-1

sixth number=25+6

seventh number=31-1

The pattern is such that in first add 8 and then in second number-1 in third 8-1 then in other-1 and so on

Concept:

A number series depicts a common relationship between the set of numbers which are given in the series. And when the arrangement of numbers is repeated in a common rule, it is called as number pattern.

Given:

12,20,19,26,...., 31,30

Find:

The missing number.

Solution:

From the above number pattern we can observe that,

• 8 is added to 12 to give the second number which is 20.

• 1 is subtracted from 20 to give the third number which is 19.

• 7 is added to 19 to give the fourth number which is 26

• 1 is subtracted from 31 to give the seventh number which is 30.

Now if we subtract 1 from 26 we get our fifth number as 25,

Further if we add 6 to 25 we get our sixth number as 31 and the series continues.

Hence we conclude that our fifth number is 25.
