no as they are isotopes of carbon but the peridic table is based on atomic number which is based on the protons.

the isotopes have same atomic no but different mass no so they are placed at same place

The  period and group to which 12/6C and 14/6C  belong in the modern periodic table is period 2 and group 14.

Explanation:

  • Species which contain same number of protons but different number of neutrons are known as isotope.  For example, ^{12}_{6}C and ^{14}_{6}C are isotopes.
  • Hence, number of protons present in both these atoms are 6. And, calculate the number of neutrons present in each of them are as follows.

^{12}_{6}C : atomic mass = no. of protons + no. of neutrons

                                           12 = 6 + no. of neutrons

                           no. of neutrons = 12 - 6

                                                      = 6

^{14}_{6}C : atomic mass = no. of protons + no. of neutrons

                                           14 = 6 + no. of neutrons

                          no. of neutrons = 14 - 6

                                                     = 8

  • As both of these contains 6 protons and also 6 electrons. Hence, they belong to group 14 (as electronic distribution is 2, 4). And, period to which it belongs is period 2.
